6 Days in the Moroccan Desert: From Marrakech to Fez



Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Telouet Kasbah – Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah – Ouarzazate (6 hours driving)
Depart early from Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi-N’Tichka pass with scenic stops along the way. Visit the Telouet Kasbah, an ancient palace on the caravan route. Continue to the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Then, head to Ouarzazate, known as the “Gateway to the Desert.” Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel.
Day 2: Ouarzazate – Skoura – Valley of Roses – Todra Gorges – Merzouga
After breakfast, visit the Atlas Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate. Next, head to Skoura to see the Amridil Kasbah surrounded by palm trees. Traverse the Valley of Roses, known for its annual festival in May. Stop at the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorges, an impressive red rock canyon. In the afternoon, arrive at the Merzouga Desert, where you will take a camel ride to watch the sunset over the Erg Chebbi dunes. Enjoy dinner and spend the night in a luxury camp with Berber music under the stars.
Day 3: Exploring Merzouga – Nomads – Khamlia – Palm Grove – Flamingo Lake
Wake up to a desert sunrise and have breakfast. Spend the day exploring the Merzouga region, famous for its dunes, mines, fossils, and oases. Visit an ancient kohl mine and meet a nomadic family to learn about their lifestyle while enjoying Berber tea. In Khamlia, enjoy traditional Gnaoua music. Then, take a walk through a palm grove and visit the Flamingo Lake. Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Merzouga.
Day 4: Merzouga – Erfoud – Midelt – Cedar Forest – Ifrane – Fez
Depart for Rissani, the ancient capital of Tafilalet, known for its lively souk. In Erfoud, visit a fossil workshop. Continue through the Ziz Valley and make a scenic stop. Have lunch in Midelt before entering the Cedar Forest of Azrou, home to Barbary macaques. Then, pass through Ifrane, known as the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its alpine architecture. Arrive in Fez, where you will spend the night.
Day 5: Guided Tour of Fez
Dedicate the day to discovering Fez, the cultural and spiritual capital of Morocco. Visit the Royal Palace Gate, the medieval Medina (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the Bou Inania Medersa, the Nejjarine Fountain, the tanneries, and the Al Quaraouiyine Mosque-University, the oldest in the world. Explore the Jewish Quarter (Mellah) and enjoy panoramic views from a fortress. Return to your riad for the night.
Day 6: Fez – Transfer to the Airport
After breakfast, enjoy some free time in Fez before your transfer to the airport. End of the desert tour in Morocco.
